Silverstone is a village in Northamptonshire and Silverstone circuit sits partly within the boundaries of the Silverstone village and partly within neighbouring village Whittlebury. It also sits partly within Buckinghamshire and this is where the entrance to the circuit can be found.
Silverstone has become the most well known car racing track because of its involvement with the Formula 1. The circuit became the home for the British Grand Prix – the UK’s turn at hosting a F1 race which makes up the F1 yearly calendar.
Silverstone does not only home the Grand Prix but it also hosts many other championships in the car racing world. Events such as the BRDC International Trophy and motor biking events feature at the circuit.
However it is the British Grand Prix which is the highlight of the venue’s calendar and which draws the largest crowds to the circuit. Interestingly the British Grand Prix, alongside the Italian Grand Prix, are the longest-standing, continuously staged F1 World Grand Prix.
Silverstone has been the home of the British Grand Prix every year since the year of 1987. Before this a few other circuits hosted the major event, including Brands Hatch and even Aintree which is better known for horse racing.
In total, 12 drivers from the UK have won the British Grand Prix of which Stirling Moss was the first. Jim Clarkwinning was the most frequent UK winner as he topped the podium five times at the circuit.
